The Outsiders arrives in 4K/UHD this Autumn!
What did you do during the beginning of a global pandemic? Francis Coppola locked down with his extended family in Napa Valley, getting together for group meals and film screenings, according to Esquire and Haute Living.
Coppola and American Zoetrope turned the further lockdowns into an opportunity to scrutinise how they could restore his films, following The Cotton Club Encore’s home video release. They released The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone to critical acclaim and now The Outsiders Complete Novel makes its debut in 4K alongside a restoration of the Theatrical cut as well!
What do fans have to look forward to in this new cut after the Complete Novel cut took the lead in 2005? In the process of restoring the Complete Novel and the Theatrical cut, fans get to see a film that has been restored from the original negatives from the American Zoetrope archives and cleaned up. The press release also teases new *NEW* deleted scenes.
I hope we see some cleaned up scenes of the deleted beginning clips showing Two-Bit rescuing Johnny from Johnny’s abusive mother, which was previously only available on B-roll footage on the 2005 Complete Novel release.
Seeing Coppola look at key scenes will be interesting and I am excited for the Old House, New Home featurette which will hopefully detail the story and restoration of the original Curtis family house location which is now the location of the Outsiders House Museum in Tulsa, owned by Danny O’Connor. S.E Hinton was filmed inside the House for this featurette by Tulsa filmmaker, Kelly Kerr.
I love extras and goodies included with a film’s release and the Studiocanal UK Collector’s bundle doesn’t disappoint, including an enticing 64 page booklet, with some beautiful set photography as prints from James Hamilton, who shot the cast, and stunning looking posters from artist Tony Stella who does the cover art work that so many fans have fallen for. I personally really hope Studiocanal provide subtitles/captions for the extras as I was disappointed to miss out on Coppola’s insightful commentary on the 2005 release. (Thank you Maxine at my university for transcribing it all for me back in the day!)
A lot of fans have been questioning what the restorations and new versions mean, with a bit of confusion over the versions of the film they will see. As the press release states, both versions of the film have been restored and their respective soundtracks on each film too. In fact, the UK Collector’s Edition bundle from Studiocanal UK has the original theatrical cut soundtrack available on a CD!
When we’d learned that the films were going to be restored, fans had hoped that the original orchestral score would be overlaid on the new cut, with revisions made to add in the ’60s rock and roll songs without losing the emotional impact the score has on the original cut. This does not seem to be the case but we are looking forward to the new release and everything included. It has been a real labor of love for the Zoetrope Head of Archives and Restorations James Mockoski as he tweeted out enticing images during the restoration process, showing how the clean up of original scenes was looking.
As a fan, these are the brand new NEW items that have caught my eye, included with the new 4K release, as detailed in the Amazon synopsis and list of extras.
- NEW Restoration Story with Zoetrope Head of Archives and Restorations James Mockoski and Colourist Gregg Garvin
- NEW Interview with Cinematographer Stephen Burum
- NEW Deleted Scenes

- NEW Outsider Looking In – Looking at key scenes of a cult classic with Francis Ford Coppola

If the new impending physical releases weren’t enough, American Zoetrope have partnered with Studiocanal and Warner Bros to have theatrical screenings of the new 4k restoration too, delighting fans who may not have had the opportunity to see their favourite film up on the big screen.
Here is a breakdown of what is available when.
Studiocanal UK ‘s physical release is out on November 8th, including the Collector’s Edition bundle and separate Blu Ray and DVD releases. Theatrical showings in cinemas will start from October 15th. Studiocanal have yet to release the information on what cinemas will be showing the restored cut.
Studiocanal International are also releasing it theatrically in Germany, where Art Haus is releasing the 4K box set with a different set of art cards on November 11th.
In North America, Warner Bros will release the film theatrically from September 26th, there are Fandango Screenings with exclusive Coppola introductions that fans can search for in their local cinemas.
In Tulsa, The Outsiders House will be holding a world premiere screening on the lawn as well as hosting a screening at the beloved Outsiders location, The Circle Cinema and both will have special guests in attendance, including the school librarian Jo Ellen Misakian whose famous petition started the process of this film being made!
The Amazon listing for the Collector’s Bundle lists all of these extras below, breaking down the 5 discs and their contents. For those who don’t need the big bundle, there are versions on Blu Ray and DVD as well. The Collector’s Bundle and DVD are also available on Zavvi (pictured below)
We are currently awaiting the Warners US release to see what goodies they put together alongside the amazing artwork from Tony Stella. Currently their release information is still pending.
